NIAGARA FALLS, ONT. - Canada plans to honour its war veterans with a new coin - featuring a red poppy.
Revenue Minister Stan Keyes says it will be the first coloured coin in the world to go into circulation, although he didn't know when it would be minted or go into circulation.
"It's just a great way to tell our story," Keyes said during a speech to the Niagara Falls Chamber of Commerce.
He did not say what denomination the new coin would be, but he noted there are no plans for a $5 coin or to eliminate the penny.
Keyes said that mint officials have tested the new coin and found the red will eventually wear off.
